III. Navajo Indian Tribe
- Racial and Socioeconomic Analysis of the Flagstaff School
District and the Leupp Schools
Working with Sarah Krakoff of the Indian Law Clinic at the University of Colorado and Lawrence Vaca from the U.S. Department of Justice, WRG conducted this ethnographic investigation of Leupp elementary and middle schools to determine the causes of lower performance by Navajo students in the Flagstaff School District. We compared standard and interpreted test scores for Leupp and other schools in the district; we prepared reports documenting the differential achievement of Indian and other minority students when compared with non-minority students in the district; we completed depositions and prepared for trial. A negotiated settlement was reached in 1998, resulting in significant improvements for the Leupp school and its students.
